SUMMARY:Ely Imaginarium - creatively changing our world
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nDo you long for a better future? Have ideas of what it might look like? \nIf facts and figures changed things\, then we’d be well on our way to creating a greener and fairer planet on which all species could thrive. Maybe our challenge now is to create a longing for something better\, to give ourselves the time and space to imagine and visualise what a different\, brighter future might look like? Creating a different future for ourselves will be much easier if we can imagine what it might actually look like! \nWe need creative thinking in order to tackle the challenges of climate change\, reducing pollution and increasing the biodiversity of our natural environment. \nCredit Andrew Wilkinson Photography\nHow might Ely and the surrounding countryside look\, how will we play\, work\, travel\, grow our food and build our homes? How will we learn\, stay well\, spend our free time and be creative? \n\nHave you say on the future in the next 2 to 25 years\n  \nEveryone is invited to Ely’s first Imaginarium to unleash their imaginations! You’ll be encouraged with ideas from around the world and paints\, pens and modelling equipment will be free to use. You can stop by for five minutes or a few hours. The Imaginarium is taking place on the same day as the Apple Fayre and Ely Cathedral’s Harvest Festival and it is supported by the City of Ely Council\, hosted and facilitated by the East Cambridgeshire’s Climate Action Network\, Cambridge Carbon Footprint\, community artist Hilary Cox Condron and Ruth Marley of the Re-Imagine Resource Centre. To give you an idea of what to expect at an Imaginarium\, see a write-up from Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination Opens in a new windowof a recent one in Cambridge\, or see this short film Opens in a new windowof one hosted in a shopping centre. \nCredit Andrew Wilkinson Photography\nThe Ely Imaginarium coincides with The Climate CoalitionOpens in a new window’s National Day of Action. Now a new Government is in place there’s a unique opportunity to show our elected officials that\, right from the start\, we want action to tackle climate change and the protection and restoration of nature to be top of their agenda. Ideas captured in The Ely Imaginarium will be shared with local decision makers and on social media so as to reach as wide an audience as possible. Ely and East Cambridgeshire’s local MP Charlotte Cane will be attending this event for part of the time. \nNo booking required\, just turn up! Small ideas or ginormous ones\, we want them all!  We’re really looking forward to creating an amazing installation from your collective imaginations in the beautiful surrounds of St Mary’s. Imaginariums are inspired by the work of the Transition Network Opens in a new window’s Rob Hopkins. \nFree event\, families very welcome. U16’s must be accompanied by an adult. You can stop by for five minutes or a few hours. \nIdeas Gallery\nWe plan to have an Ideas Gallery containing a number of Ideas Pods to get your creative juices running! \n  \n\nCredit Andrew Wilkinson Photography\n\nThank you to City of Ely and East Cambridgeshire District Council for funding support. \nSupported by: – \n

SUMMARY:Soham "Greener Together" Initiative Launch at the Pumpkin Fair
DESCRIPTION:The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network is working in partnership with Soham Town Council to develop and run the “Soham Greener Together” Initiative to inspire\, educate and persuade the people of the town of Soham and the surrounding areas to work together on projects that create a greener\, lower carbon community that reduces the impact of climate change and increases the biodiversity of their community. \n \nThe Initiative will be launched at the Pumpkin Fair on the 28 September 2024 by local MP Charlotte Cane – who will also announce the winner of the Logo Competition. The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network (the Network) will have a Gazebo at the Fair with display boards listing many of the activities that local people could get involved. The purpose of being at the event is to engage with as many local people as possible\, sign them up to wanting to know more and encourage them to get involved and organise any activities and events under the umbrella of the Initiative. \nThe 1st phase of the Initiative will run from the end of September till the end of December 2024. With a 2ndphase from January till April 2025 ending with the “Greener Together Fair” on Saturday 26 April at The Pavilion\, Soham. From May 2025 onwards it is hoped that various activities will be run by Soham people supported by the East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network. \nDuring the 1st Phase there are plans for the following activities: – \n\nAwareness raising stand at the Pumpkin Fair\nSwishing Event (clothes swop)\nThe inaugural Soham Earth (Climate) Café – informal discussion group stimulated by a speaker – 20th October 2024\nAn activity focused at younger adults\nVarious events and displays at Soham library\nA display at Soham Sports Hall\nAt least one talk to a community group\n\n \nAccording to a newspaper report of the time\, the first event in 1975 was intended as a contest between allotment holders and Village College pupils\, but it attracted many entrants from outside Soham with more than 80 Pumpkins being entered altogether. \nThe heaviest pumpkin of the day was grown by Mr L Setchell of Witcham with a weight of 62lb 14oz. Mr George Smith of Bushell Lane won the Soham prize with his pumpkin weighing 61lb 5oz. \nThere was also a flower-arranging competition and a decorated vegetable competition. Susan Taylor won the Flower arranging and Anita Mann won the Best Decorated Vegetable. Judges included A.E.Lawrence (Headmaster of Soham Village College) and Walter Gidney (Town Councillor and Fruit and Vegetable business owner). \nMoney was raised by stalls in the Church Hall that were run by various organisations such as the Brownies\, Scouts and Over 60s to name a few\, but also by individuals like a young chap called Jeremy Lane who sold books and games (he would have only been 12 at the time!) \nJust over £170 was raised for the church roof restoration fund by the first fair.

The town council has been clearing the land of agricultural buildings with the aim of helping existing plants and wildlife\, such as bee orchids and yellow rattle to thrive\, and encouraging new animals\, plants and insects to populate the areas. Once complete\, the town council hopes the new site will form part of a green loop around Soham which also includes the town’s five commons\, its Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) mainly located at Wet Horse Fen\, wetlands and established protected green sites. \nTo find us use what3words – use the link below and/or type: revisits.estimate.shop into the app.https://what3words.com/revisits.estimate.shop\nPlease be aware that there is no parking available on or near the site.
