DESCRIPTION:As we enter Spring with a mixture of warm and cooler weather it is still important to think and act on ensuring that our homes are heated in the most efficient way to reduce carbon emissions and save money particularly as Electricity tariffs will be increasing from the 1 April 2025. This month our Ely Earth Cafe will continue the discussion on focusing on ways to improve the energy efficiency of homes. This Earth Cafe forms part of the three month campaign to “think locally” on ways to reduce carbon emissions as well creating cosy homes for everyone – leaving no-one behind. \nWe are working with Action on Energy East Cambridgeshire\, Community Energy South and East Cambridgeshire District Council. The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network is also offering FREE initial Home Energy Advice from January until the end of March 2025 – to home owners\, tenants and landlords. We don’t want to leave anyone behind in not having  a cosy energy saving home that also helps to reduce carbon emissions for our planet. Our expert panel will explore the critical question: could nature be our best flood defence? \nThis event is taking place at The University of Hull so if you’re in Yorkshire why not join us in person? \nFlood risk is expected to at least double by 2050\, with 5.2 million properties in England already at risk. The UK Government committed to doubling the number of flood management projects\, including nature-based solutions. The Environment Agency estimates that this means around 260 Natural Flood Management projects need to be implemented in England between 2021 and 2027.

DESCRIPTION:Ahead of Ely’s popular repair cafe returning to the city early next year\, Finn Macgregor\, one of the members of the Ely Repair Cafe volunteer team\, talks about what people can expect. \nDo you have something that’s broken that you don’t know how to fix but can’t bring yourself to throw away? \nSomething like a toaster\, kettle\, lamp\, bag\, toy\, jewellery\, pair of jeans or computer? \nBring it along to the repair cafe\, which is being held on Saturday January 25 from 11am to 2pm in Ely Library and get it seen to by an experienced volunteer repairer for free. \nThey will pinpoint the problem and try to fix it there and then for you\, or let you know what spare parts to get for when you come back next time. \nWe had a hugely successful Repair Cafe back in January 2024. We fixed a total of 26 items\, prevented 69kg of waste and 230kg of CO2 emissions – that’s like growing four tree seedlings for 10 years. \nRepair cafes don’t just save money and reduce waste\, they also bring people together. Our repairers are keen to share their skills\, stop things going to landfill and reduce the impact that buying new stuff has on the environment.\nWe’re looking for general volunteers and repairers to help us on the day and at future cafes.
