SUMMARY:First Burwell Earth Cafe – “Reducing Carbon Emissions at home by increasing Energy Efficiency and Saving £’s”
DESCRIPTION:This is the FIRST Burwell Earth Cafe. Earth Cafes are friendly informal discussion events – with free tea and coffee – where you share your thoughts\, ideas and concerns with others. \nAs we enter Spring with a mixture of warm and cooler weather it is still important to think and act on ensuring that our homes are heated in the most efficient way to reduce carbon emissions and save money – particularly as Electricity tariffs will be increasing from the 1 April 2025.  This Earth Cafe forms part of the three month East Cambs District wide campaign to “think locally” on ways to reduce carbon emissions as well creating cosy homes for everyone – leaving no-one behind. \nWe are working with Action on Energy East Cambridgeshire\, Community Energy South and East Cambridgeshire District Council. The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network is also offering FREE initial Home Energy Advice from January until the end of March 2025 – to home owners\, tenants and landlords. We don’t want to leave anyone behind in not having  a cosy energy saving home that also helps to reduce carbon emissions for our planet. Click Here for more details. \nPlease book in advance as places are limited. We are also offering Free bird Boxes for those that attend the event.

SUMMARY:'Climate change\, Gardening\, and Us'
DESCRIPTION:As part of the “Soham Greener Together” Initiative we will have a talk from Clive Boase from Climate Change Gardening talking about “Climate Change Gardening” Help your garden to thrive and become a haven for wildlife as our climate changes. \n \n‘Climate Change Gardening’ became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Registered Charity Number: 1208653) in June 2024. We consist of a group of gardeners that are concerned about climate change. The CIO is based in East Anglia\, and has six trustees. \nThe Charity: – \n\n\n\nRaises awareness of the impact of climate change on gardens.\nEnables gardeners to maintain an enjoyable\, productive and resilient garden\, despite climate change.\nEncourages and empower gardeners to use their gardens to help mitigate both the impacts of climate change\, and climate change itself.\n\n\n\nPrivate gardens are the third largest land use sector in England\, with over 20 million people identifying as gardeners. Whether our gardens are large or small\, through our choices of plants\, cultivation techniques\, composts\, watering\, wild areas\, and many other details\, together we can make an important difference. \nPlease do book a place as seats will be limited. SUMMARY:"Getting Climate Messages Across" - Andrew Maliphant\, Great Collaboration Project
DESCRIPTION:There is so much to consider when responding to climate change and nature recovery that it can become a daunting prospect.  As well as making it easier for people to find their own path through the climate jungle\, good and effective communication is vital when encouraging more people to get involved – and of course there is no communication if you don’t get a reply! Andrew Maliphant will be leading a discussion based on an analysis of audience segments published by Climate Outreach\, who are the first British charity to focus exclusively on public engagement with climate change.  Their analysis is on their website under the banner of Britain Talks Climate – let’s get our heads together to discuss communication experiences and ideas. \n \n  \nTo register for this online event please select the RSVP GOING button below in order to receive a Zoom link. \n

SUMMARY:Burwell Imaginarium - Follow-up
DESCRIPTION:In June\, this year we organised with Cambridgeshire County Council – an Imaginarium at the Burwell Carnival. Visitors were invited to think about “Health and its impact on Climate Change and the Environment”. During the afternoon we received 60 ideas and other ideas on a large map of Burwell. \n \n  \n \n  \nNow\, as the evenings get darker\, we are getting together and going to sort out these idea cards in some sort of order and unroll the large map of Burwell and see what it people added to it. \nWe are then going to discuss what might be the next stage in turning these ideas into reality. \nAs a third stage we will present them to the Burwell Parish Council. \nAnyone from Burwell and the surrounding areas is welcome to come along and help us – even if you did not take part in the Imaginarium. We are particularly keen to see people who actually submitted an idea on the day. Children under 16 yrs must be accompanied by an adult. \n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Ely Imaginarium - creatively changing our world
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nDo you long for a better future? Have ideas of what it might look like? \nIf facts and figures changed things\, then we’d be well on our way to creating a greener and fairer planet on which all species could thrive. Maybe our challenge now is to create a longing for something better\, to give ourselves the time and space to imagine and visualise what a different\, brighter future might look like? Creating a different future for ourselves will be much easier if we can imagine what it might actually look like! \nWe need creative thinking in order to tackle the challenges of climate change\, reducing pollution and increasing the biodiversity of our natural environment. \nCredit Andrew Wilkinson Photography\nHow might Ely and the surrounding countryside look\, how will we play\, work\, travel\, grow our food and build our homes? How will we learn\, stay well\, spend our free time and be creative? \n\nHave you say on the future in the next 2 to 25 years\n  \nEveryone is invited to Ely’s first Imaginarium to unleash their imaginations! You’ll be encouraged with ideas from around the world and paints\, pens and modelling equipment will be free to use. You can stop by for five minutes or a few hours. To give you an idea of what to expect at an Imaginarium\, see a write-up from Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination Opens in a new windowof a recent one in Cambridge\, or see this short film Opens in a new windowof one hosted in a shopping centre. \nCredit Andrew Wilkinson Photography\nThe Ely Imaginarium coincides with The Climate CoalitionOpens in a new window’s National Day of Action. Now a new Government is in place there’s a unique opportunity to show our elected officials that\, right from the start\, we want action to tackle climate change and the protection and restoration of nature to be top of their agenda. Ideas captured in The Ely Imaginarium will be shared with local decision makers and on social media so as to reach as wide an audience as possible. Ely and East Cambridgeshire’s local MP Charlotte Cane will be attending this event for part of the time. \nNo booking required\, just turn up! SUMMARY:Soham "Greener Together" Initiative Launch at the Pumpkin Fair
DESCRIPTION:The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network is working in partnership with Soham Town Council to develop and run the “Soham Greener Together” Initiative to inspire\, educate and persuade the people of the town of Soham and the surrounding areas to work together on projects that create a greener\, lower carbon community that reduces the impact of climate change and increases the biodiversity of their community. \n \nThe Initiative will be launched at the Pumpkin Fair on the 28 September 2024 by local MP Charlotte Cane – who will also announce the winner of the Logo Competition. The East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network (the Network) will have a Gazebo at the Fair with display boards listing many of the activities that local people could get involved. The purpose of being at the event is to engage with as many local people as possible\, sign them up to wanting to know more and encourage them to get involved and organise any activities and events under the umbrella of the Initiative. \nThe 1st phase of the Initiative will run from the end of September till the end of December 2024. With a 2ndphase from January till April 2025 ending with the “Greener Together Fair” on Saturday 26 April at The Pavilion\, Soham. From May 2025 onwards it is hoped that various activities will be run by Soham people supported by the East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network. \nDuring the 1st Phase there are plans for the following activities: – \n\nAwareness raising stand at the Pumpkin Fair\nSwishing Event (clothes swop)\nThe inaugural Soham Earth (Climate) Café – informal discussion group stimulated by a speaker – 20th October 2024\nAn activity focused at younger adults\nVarious events and displays at Soham library\nA display at Soham Sports Hall\nAt least one talk to a community group\n\n \nAccording to a newspaper report of the time\, the first event in 1975 was intended as a contest between allotment holders and Village College pupils\, but it attracted many entrants from outside Soham with more than 80 Pumpkins being entered altogether. \nThe heaviest pumpkin of the day was grown by Mr L Setchell of Witcham with a weight of 62lb 14oz. Mr George Smith of Bushell Lane won the Soham prize with his pumpkin weighing 61lb 5oz. \nThere was also a flower-arranging competition and a decorated vegetable competition. Susan Taylor won the Flower arranging and Anita Mann won the Best Decorated Vegetable. Judges included A.E.Lawrence (Headmaster of Soham Village College) and Walter Gidney (Town Councillor and Fruit and Vegetable business owner). \nMoney was raised by stalls in the Church Hall that were run by various organisations such as the Brownies\, Scouts and Over 60s to name a few\, but also by individuals like a young chap called Jeremy Lane who sold books and games (he would have only been 12 at the time!) \nJust over £170 was raised for the church roof restoration fund by the first fair.
